CDC Comparadun

Comparaduns and Sparkle Duns are found in almost every trout angler’s fly box. Most anglers have a preference—some favor the sparkle of a Sparkle Dun, while others prefer the simplicity of a Comparadun.

Both styles are effective because they sit low on the water, rather than being held above the surface by a traditional hackled dry fly. This makes them especially effective when trout are sipping insects in or just below the surface film.

This pattern incorporates CDC for the wing, giving it the ability to be fished two different ways:

• Fish it as a dry: Apply floatant to keep the fly riding right on the surface.
• Fish it in the film: Leave it untreated and allow the body to sink slightly below the surface while the CDC wing helps suspend the fly in the film.

That versatility makes it an excellent choice for selective trout feeding on emerging or freshly hatched mayflies.
